Understanding Your Trans Partner

Relationships can be difficult no matter who you are, where you come from, and the changes life constantly brings. This can sometimes be magnified when, in a relationship, your partner belongs to the transgender community. Creating understanding and open dialogue between yourself and your significant other on how to adapt to changes, questions about sexuality, gender identity, and technical aspects of gender reassignment, are crucial elements of fostering healthy communication between you and the person you love.

Fears and concerns

You may be wondering how you can support your partner through their journey. You might be asking how you can let your partner know of ways they can support you. Both of these things are valid and as two people in a relationship, it’s important to communicate and understand how both of you are feeling at any point during the transition period.

Questions about sexuality are normal to arise at this time as well. As two people in a relationship, these worries and concerns are normal and encouraged to discuss between you. If you are struggling to communicate your feelings on this sensitive topic, this is when you should consider reaching out to a professional in a safe, therapeutic environment.

It’s important not to judge yourself for these doubts and fears you may be having, and instead, embrace them and be open about them in order to move forwards in a healthy way.

Interpersonal and cultural difficulties

As we step into 2021, it is clear that the world has progressed greatly when it comes to rights and respect towards anyone part of or connected to the trans community. However, we still have ways to go, and having concerns about how you will be perceived and responded to culturally and socially is a legitimate concern. This is relevant both within and outside of the trans community.

As with any member of the LGBTQI+ community, it can be a journey to love who you are and who you will become. In therapy, we will work on helping you celebrate your unique identity, understand where you place within new life dynamics, and talk through the concerns you may have of the outside response to your choices. These are personal choices, and yours to make, and we will work on building the confidence you deserve to live the happiest life you want to live.

There are also interpersonal difficulties that may arise between you and your partner. Experiencing the deep strain of dysphoria, surgery recovery, and the exploration of gender identity can be a lot for one person to handle. In your relationship, these issues may become exacerbated with the regular day-to-day stress of maintaining a healthy partnership. There is nothing wrong with needing to ask for help for these personal issues, and here at APS Counseling, you can count on us to provide a safe, warm space for you to navigate through your concerns.

Questions about the future

You and your partner may be considering getting married, expand your family in the future, and take further steps to strengthen your relationship. This raises questions on how to obtain the correct gender reassignment documentation for marriage, adoption, and other important life milestones you want to have with your significant other.

There are many resources and tools both online and in therapy that you can use to help yourself navigate through these serious life questions. It’s important to remember that anything is possible for you and your partner, and that these opportunities are available to you both no matter where you are in the transition process.
